Featured REVIEW: WorldWar Z, a prose novel by MaxBrooks, $13.99. RECOMMENDED
World War Z: An Oral History ofthe Zombie War is one of the few works of prose fiction we carry in our store, but it’s so well done, and crosses over into many of our interests, so we couldn’t resist.
The conceit of this book is simple: sometime in the near future, the dead rise up as shambling, moaning monsters hungry for human flesh. Unprepared to deal with this rapidly expanding threat effectively, global civilization collapses, and humanity survives in only a few beleaguered enclaves, leaving earth to the walking dead. World War Z is the story of how our species regrouped and took back our home, told in the form of interviews with the people who made it happen: foot soldiers, doctors, presidents, strategists, and simple survivors, drawn from all over the world.
This book is one of the best fantasy (or perhaps I should say SF) novels I have read in some time. Author Max Brooks adroitly balances creeping menace, excellent characterization, insightful world building, and an engaging plot while obeying the cardinal rule of make believe: imagine one thing that isn’t true actually is true, and then rigorously show the reader how the world changes, and how it stays the same, as a result.
In short, a great read for those who love scary stories, and those who don’t …albeit perhaps with all the lights on.
