Featured REVIEW:

Ex Machina, by Brian K Vaughan and Tony Harris, available in both trade paperback and hard cover from DC.

Ex Machina is first and foremost about politics, and what happens when we confuse competence (or even sheer, blind luck) in an unrelated area with political competence. By that, I mean it's about a superhero who gets elected mayor of New York City.

Vaughan has built a reputation for evocative storytelling and excellent pacing in his other comics, most notably Y the Last Man. He employs a particularly effective style of temporal dislocation here, with events jumping back and forth in time as the story demands, and Harris' voluptuous art does a great job of cuing us instantly to where (and when) we're at.

The new mayor doesn't have much of a honeymoon before his hero status wears off and political reality sets in, laving the reader constantly wondering whether our hero needs to worry more about the aliens from the future or a sanitation strike, while managing to keep everything movingin a way that a more mundane political narrative might balk at.

Hundred's politics are definitely left of center, but he's a smart guy who listens to advice, and isn't afraid to take radical steps. Part of the fascination of the series is watching our world diverge not just along paranormal lines into an alternate universe, but along political ones as well. There are six books in the series so far, each roughly covering a particular political crisis in the new Mayor's first term in office, with a total of 60-75issues of the ongoing series planned. I highly, highly recommend it, for any fans of thoughtful superhero comics, especially including Watchmen, Astro City, and Vaughan's other ongoing works. I think it'd also make a great entry point to genre comics for fans of The West Wing.
