New GAMES this week:
New releases: We did not receive any new games this week, but Jim is away at the Alliance Games Distributors Summit this weekend, and will hopefully bring some cool stuff back from their warehouse next week.
Regular Stock Items: Modern Myths is a full-service game story as well as a comics store, and we carry a wide assortment of board, card and role playing games. We range from new games like Aces & Eights, Scion, Traveller, Trail of Cthulhu, and Dungeons & Dragons Fourth Edition to old favorites like Warhammer, Warhammer40K, Palladium and Unknown Armies. For board and card games, too, we run the gamut, from Settlers of Catan, Munchkin,Carcassonne, and Guillotine to Blokus, Chessand Go. We also carry boosters and starters for a few collectible games, including Magic The Gathering, Heroclix, Star Wars minis, Axis and Allies minis, and Dungeons & Dragons minis.
"But what if you don't have it?" I hear you cry. Let me assure you: if it's in print, we will gladly order it for you, at no extra cost. Moreover, we do game orders at least once a week, so if it's available, you won't have to wait long, either. (And, yes, this applies to paints and minis from Games Workshop, as well.)
D&D Third Edition note: While we still have a few in stock, third edition books are now officially out of print. We have, and will continue to buy, 3.5 books in the used section, all in good condition, some of which are also on eBay. If you are looking for new material, but don't wish to switch to fourth edition, check out the new Pathfinder RPG from Paizo.
EVENTS: 24 Hour Comics Day: The weekend after this weekend, we will once again host an array of local artists as they buckle down to create a 24 page comic in only 24 hours. We'll be starting this year at NOON on Saturday, October 18 and running straight through until Noon on Sunday the 19th. We are proud to host this event, and we will stay open straight through the night and provide pizza, coffee, breakfast and table space for anyone who wants to make comics here in the store. We'll even provide comics pages at our cost (a few cents each) for the occasion. All you need to bring is something with which to write and/or draw. This event is free, and no prior experience is required. Modern Myths Book Club: On the last Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM, we host a comics discussion group. This month, in honor of Halloween, we'll be reading and talking about From Hell, Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's brilliantly chilling historical novel about Jack the Ripper. Much more than a splatter-fest, Moore and Campbell pick 19th century London apart, and in the process share profound insights about today. A great read, though not for the squeamish. Refreshments will be served. Next Meeting: October 30, 2008.
Board Game Night every Saturday: Join us for a wide range of European-style board and card strategy games. Newcomers welcome! We'll provide the games and teach the rules, but you can also bring your favorites. Every Saturday from 7:00 - 11:00 PM. Western Mass Comics Creators Group: Meeting regularly on the first Tuesday night of every month. You can join other local comics creators, amateur and professional, for an informal roundtable of ideas, tips, and hopefully, inspiration! Newcomers (published and non-) always welcome. For more info, contact Scott Sheaffer by email: KMacAlp (AT) aol (PERIOD) com. Meeting NEXT TUESDAY: November 4th, 7:00 PM.
Current eBay Listings: We don't have any auctions this week on our eBay Store (though we do encourage you to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fundanyway.) What we do have, though, is a set of Buffy Season 8 comics, some Evangelion action figures (a Revoltech EVA 04 and a Real Model EVA 00 Prototype), and some hard cover graphic novels: Legion Of Superheroes Archives V01, The Flash Archives V02, and Superman Archives V01 and Superman Archives V05. Our regular selection of action figures, used graphic novels, used RPGs, and sets of comics & manga remains available online and here at the store.
Featured REVIEW: SWAMP THING, by Alan Moore, six volumes, $19.99, published by DC. RECOMMENDED.
Swamp Thing was originally created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson in the 1970s. Alec Holland was a botanist working on a new growth acceleration formula in hopes of ending hunger. Shady business interests decided to stop him, and has his lab in the bayous of Louisiana blown up, while he was inside. Holland’s flaming body was soaked in his formula and flung into the swamp. A few weeks later, his soggy body emerged, transformed into a strange human/plant hybrid, the Swamp Thing.
Dr. Holland went on to have many adventures before his comic was canceled. Then, in the mid 1980s, DC decided to give a Swamp Thing monthly comic another try, and after a few issues trying out various writers, handed the reins to an unknown British writer named Alan Moore.
From his first issue, Moore began to set a new gold standard for fantasy comics, beginning by revealing that the Swamp Thing origin story mentioned above made no sense, couldn’t possibly be true, and then offering something much stranger in its place. Moore went on to write over 40 issues, all of which were excellent horror/adventure comics. Along the way, he also: created the character of John Constantine, whose solo comic Hellblazer is still chugging along twenty years later; inspired DC to separate titles like Swamp Thing from the fictional universe of Blue Beetle, Superman, and Ambush Bug, and thus lay the ground work for the Vertigo comics imprint; and finally, convince DC to let him write whatever he wanted, which led directly to Watchmen. That’s the comics history which makes Moore’s run on Swamp Thing ‘important’. It’s also really good. Twenty-five years later, Moore’s stories and writing haven’t lost their timeliness, their interest, or their creepiness. The art, by Steve Bissette, John Totleben, Rick Veitch, and Alfredo Alcala, also looks good, even as the high-quality printing of today often reveals the flaws of early 80s color separations. Moore's writing, meanwhile, allows the stories to withstand even a crossover to the Crisis On Infinite Earths. (For my money, his brief montage of it makes the Crisis seem much cooler than it actually was.) Fans of horror or fantasy comics, Alan Moore, or later Vertigo titles such as Sandman, Lucifer or Fables will all enjoy this gem of a series.
