-This book opens with Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&*!, creating vignettes of the people, events, and comics that shaped Art Spiegelman. It traces the artist's evolution from a MAD-comics obsessed boy in Rego Park, Queens, to a neurotic adult examining the effect of his parents' memories of Auschwitz on his own son.  The second part presents a facsimile of Breakdowns, the long-sought after collection of the artist's comics of the 1970s, the book that triggers these memories. Breakdowns established the mode of formally sophisticated comics that transformed the medium, and includes the prototype of Maus, cubist experiments, an essay on humor, and the definitive genre-twisting pulp story "Ace Hole-Midget Detective."

EVENTS:

24 Hour Comics Day starts THIS SATURDAY, and runs from NOON, October 18, until NOON on Sunday, October 19This event is free, and no prior experience is required.    We have played host to local artists rising to meet the challenge of writing and drawing a 24 page comic in only 24hours for the past four years, and we are proud to do it again this year. We will stay open straight through the night and provide pizza, coffee, breakfast and table space for anyone who wants to make comics here in the store.  We'll even provide comics pages at our cost (a few cents each), and free Bawls soda for the occasion.  All you need to bring is something with which to write and/or draw.   About a dozen people have signed up, and we have room for more, so sign up now, or just show up on the day.

Modern Myths Book Club:
On the last Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM, we host a comics discussion group.  This month, in honor of Halloween, we'll be reading and talking about From Hell, Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's brilliantly chilling historical novel about Jack the Ripper.  Much more than a splatter-fest, Moore and Campbell pick 19th century London apart, and in the process share profound insights about today.  A great read, though not for the squeamish.  Refreshments will be served.  Next Meeting: October 30, 2008.

Miniatures Painting Workshop on Saturday, November 8, 2008, 3:00 to 5:00 PM
. This event will be free and open to anyone.  We will provide basic paints and brushes.  While we will be focusing on Games Workshop figures (Warhammer,Warhammer40K, Lord Of The Rings), you are welcome to work on miniatures for any game system.

Featured REVIEW:

Cat Getting Out Of A Bag, by Jeffrey Brown, Chronicle Books, HC, $12.95RECOMMENDED

Jeffrey Brown has made a name for himself in the indie comics world, writing and drawing quiet little stories (often in quiet little books) about falling in love, breaking up, sex, and the quiet joys of ordinary American life—or else unselfconsciously silly stories about the superheroes and giant robots that delighted him as a younger man.  He often finds a wry humor in his own misfortune or in the absurdity of a costumed villain called The Puncher.

Cat Getting Out Of A Bag is a mix of both of these approaches.  It is exactly what it claims to be, a series of vignettes about cats going about their (often charming, sometimes disgusting) business, while the author watches them. This book effectively distills tens of thousands of You Tube videos of people’s feline companions into about a hundred graceful pages, capturing only the cutest, funniest, most revealing moments. If you like cats, cute things, or Jeffrey Brown, this book is for you. It also makes a perfect gift for cat lovers who otherwise wouldn’t be interested in a book of cartoons.
