New GAMES this week: New releases:
Because of the Holiday, we did not receive a new games order this week. We should be receiving more goodies next week.
Regular Stock Items: Modern Myths is a full-service game story as well as a comics store, and we carry a wide assortment of board, card and role playing games. We range from new games like Aces & Eights, Scion, Traveller, Trail of Cthulhu, and Dungeons & Dragons Fourth Edition to old favorites like Warhammer, Warhammer40K, Palladium and Unknown Armies. For board and card games, too, we run the gamut, from Settlers of Catan, Munchkin,Carcassonne, and Guillotine to Blokus, Chessand Go. We also carry boosters and starters for a few collectible games, including Magic The Gathering, Heroclix, Star Wars minis, Axis and Allies minis, and Dungeons & Dragons minis.
"But what if you don't have it?" I hear you cry. Let me assure you: if it's in print, we will gladly order it for you, at no extra cost. Moreover, we do game orders at least once a week, so if it's available, you won't have to wait long, either. (And, yes, this applies to paints and minis from Games Workshop, as well.) D&D Third Edition note: While we still have a few in stock, third edition books are now officially out of print. We have, and will continue to buy, 3.5 books in the used section, all in good condition, some of which are also on eBay. If you are looking for new material, but don't wish to switch to fourth edition, check out the new Pathfinder RPG from Paizo.

Modern Myths Book Club: Our book club has been meeting every month since January of this year. Now Mike I has written the first in what will be a regular series of write-ups of each meeting.
"Book Club Report 11/20/08: While our book club meetings usually happen on the last Thursday of every month, this month that day happens to fall on Thanksgiving, so we met a week early, on November 20th. We had a decent sized turnout, seven people in attendance to discuss Carla Speed McNeil’s Sin Eater, the first story arc of her ongoing series Finder. It being a short (and for many of us very busy) month, not everyone had a chance to finish reading the book, though many in the group had read it in the past, so we still found we had plenty to talk about.
We all expressed a real appreciation for Ms. McNeil’s ability with characterization and setting. We then went on to discuss the storytelling approach used in Sin Eater. Finder takes place in a very vibrant, detailed science fiction world (to describe which the creator has coined the term “aboriginal SF”). Sin Eater, however, does little to ease the reader into the world, and doesn’t give much explanation describing the way it works. Rather, it jumps right into the story with little exposition, leaving the reader to try and fill in the blanks on their own. Some in the group expressed frustration at this technique, while others enjoyed the challenge and mystery of piecing things together. Good points were made on both sides of the discussion
The group then turned to discussing the art. We were all impressed at how quickly Carla Speed McNeil’s art improved. It certainly wasn't bad in the beginning of the book, but even just a few chapters in you can see a marked improvement in her technique and an increase in her confidence to tackle more complex compositions. We also discussed the similarities we saw between her art and that of Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise) and Dave Sim (Cerebus).
To wrap up the meeting, we decided as a group that for our next book we’ll be reading The Adventures Of Luther Arkwright by Brian Talbot. We also decided that since the last Thursday of December is Christmas, and since the week before would likely be a very busy time for many of us and (hopefully) for the store, that we will skip December and meet next on the last Thursday of January, the 29th. Please join us in 2009!

Featured REVIEW:
ARMY @ LOVE by Rick Veitch & Gary Erskine. Volumes 1 and 2 are available in paperback for 9.99 and 12.99, respectively. Army @ Love continues in the monthly 6-issue miniseries “Army @ Love: The Art Of War”</o:p> Army @ Love is a current war satire in the style of M*A*S*H. Written by Rick Veitch and drawn by Gary Erskine, the series takes place in the not-too-distant future, in the fictional Middle-Eastern country of “Afbaghistan,” where the United States has been waging a seemingly-endless war on terror for several years. The army’s department of “Motivation and Morale” is run by a former soda company marketing executive who’s main job is to sell the armed services experience to the country’s youth as a culture of extreme sports, fun technology, and hedonism. Between (and often during) bouts of intense combat, Army @ Love’s soldiers unwind by turning the Afbaghistan countryside into a frat house. Part Catch-22, part Animal House, and part soap-opera, Army @ Love is subversive, sexy, and just flat-out hilarious. Recommended for anyone in need of a laugh over our country’s place in the world and the effect of perpetual military action on the culture at large. MATURE READERS.
