Featured REVIEW:

This month, instead of a single review, each of us on staff will take a moment to step onto the soap box and talk about our favorite books and games for2008.  This week, our Manager shares:

Jim’s Favorite Things in 2008

2008 was a good year for pop culture, and there were a number of highlights for me.  Don’t read this list as based on any sort of objective criteria; it’s just the stuff I had the most fun with or got my attention this year, in no particular order.

The Walking Dead: Robert Kirkman continues to astonish me with his willingness to wrench this survival horror epic in new directions. It’s the only book I’m reading right now where I genuinely believe that no character, even the supposed star, is really safe. Much more regular releases in 2008 were a big help in keeping my interest. While this wasn’t technically new in 2008, it grabbed my attention again in a way that makes it one of my most anticipated periodical comics.

The end of Y the Last Man: Note-perfect and deeply moving, it was the perfect bookend to a series that I really, really liked. I loved that the world got a ‘Happily Ever After’ of sorts, but that Yorick, even in his dotage, was still being swept along by events. As a package, the entire thing is sublime, and to see it end was bittersweet, but the ending itself was beautiful.

Caliber: First Canon of Justice: This was a limited series from Radical Comics, a new independent publisher who is doing some really interesting things (see also their City of Dust series that’s running right now). The high concept is Arthur and Camelot as a supernatural Western. Make Excalibur a magic revolver, turn Merlin into a half-Indian Shaman, and you’re off to the races. Not hugely profound or even groundbreaking, I suppose, but great fun truly executed well. The fact that it’s from a very promising new publisher is a big plus, too.

Trail of Cthulhu: Everything I like about the Call of Cthulhu RPG with none of the stuff I don’t. TWO of my favorite RPG authors (Kenneth Hite and Robin Laws) got together to make a great game much, much better. The new system for handling investigations as well as an innovative way to balance you preferred level of pulp vs. horror have actually made me want to play a Cthulhu game again.

Dungeons& Dragons 4th Edition: Call me pedestrian, call me nostalgic, but the new edition of D&D has really captured my imagination this year. It’s fun, fast, far more balanced than any other version of the game, but mostly, and this is the crucial improvement, it’s really easy to run. Testimonial: In nearly 30 years of all 4 version of the game, I have never read a Dungeon Master’s Guide cover-to-cover, until this year. I’m having more fun running and playing D&D than I have since I first discovered it. I will always love ‘indy’ RPGs with their intricate plotting and finely-detailed cooperative play, but the visceral thrill of dropping a horde of zombies onto my happy gaming group after a long week at work doesn’t get stale either.
