Featured REVIEW:
This week we have two things to share. First, for fans of the hit series Mouse Guard, here's a long interviewwith creator David Petersen by the Onion AV Club. Second, we have our final look back at the high lights of last year, as Modern Myths rookie Pete picks his favorites for 2008:
Unknown Soldier: Putting a new face on an American classic, the redesigned bandage-bearing soldier takes the war genre to Africa, a rarely addressed, and refreshingly original, subject. Also, it isn’t written by Garth Ennis who, though a fine author, has seemingly dominated war themed comics.
X-Men: Magneto Testament: A foray into the painful past that has made one of comics’ most recognizable villains into the metal-molding nemesis he is today. Marvel’s inability to keep their own facts straight aside (Magneto’s name is now Max Eisenhardt), Testament is an unusual find amongst Superhero titles. Not nearly as focused upon his magnetic powers as life in Nazi Germany, Testament colorfully documents the trials of a young man and his family from Berlin to Warsaw, and finally Auschwitz.
Battlefields: A new endeavor by Garth Ennis (I know, I know ;P) featuring short, three issue stories dealing with new takes on the Second World War. Similar to War Stories (another Ennis project), Battlefields has so far covered female Soviet bomber pilots, romance between a nurse and a British soldier in India, and coming soon, the crew of a tank cut off in enemy territory.
Guerillas: A sci-fi twist on the Vietnam Conflict, Guerillas follows a lone US marine and the squad that adopted him; a bunch of genetically altered chimpanzees trained to fight the Vietcong. Written more like a graphic novel than a monthly serial, the stylings of new author/artist Brahm Revel paint a new picture of war’s futility that only sentient monkeys can deliver.
Okko Board Game: Based on the Japanese-esque comic from Archaia Studio Press, the Okko board game is a tactical combat game with a modular playing mat. One side plays samurai and the other plays demons. It is fairly straightforward in game play, but the ability to customize the battlefield makes for incredible replay value.
