EVENTS:

Living Forgotten Realms D&D:On the first Thursday and third Sunday of every month, we are running Dungeons & Dragons 4e in the store, using Living Forgotten Realms adventures.  'LFR' is the official campaign setting of the RPGA (the long-standing official D&D fan club).  LFR games are open to any RPGA member with a legal character.  If you aren’t a member, joining takes two minutes and is free, and if you don’t have a character, we can make one up for you on the spot.  Manager Jim Crocker and Assistant Manager Michael Dow will alternate as Dungeon Masters, running different adventures, so even if you come to both games every month, you’ll still have something new to play.  (You can play the same character each time or alternate characters if you want.)  Free, ages 12 and up welcome, no experience necessary.  Our next session will be next week, on Thursday, December 3rd, starting at 6:30 PM.  Because of the expected holiday rush, this will be the last in-store session of 2009.

</b>
Miniatures Painting Workshop:On the second Saturday of each month from 3:00-5:00 PM, staff member Pete Serio leads a free workshop for folks who want to paint Warhammer, 40K, and other Games Workshop miniatures.  No experience necessary.  Feel free to bring your own figure--from any game--or we can provide you with a sample mini, paints and brushes.  Next Meeting: Saturday, December 12th.  Free, ages 12 and up welcome,no experience necessary.

Board Game Night (for gamers!) every Saturday:
Join us for a wide range of European-style board and card strategy games. Newcomers are welcome, but some familiarity with European board games is helpful. We'll provide the games and teach the rules, but you can also bring your favorites. A great chance to try before you buy.  Free, no purchase necessary, ages 12+.  Every Saturday evening, 7:00-11:00 PM.

Family Board Game Day:
On the FOURTH Sunday of every month, learn to play some of the great board games we sell here in store, with a particular emphasis on games adults and kids can enjoy together in a relaxed atmosphere with staff member Shannon Doyle.  Try our featured game, or bring your own.  Free, all ages welcome, no experience necessary.  Our next meeting will beon Sunday, December 27, from 2-5 PM.  Unwrap your holiday loot, and we'll help you figure out how to play it.

Modern Myths Book Club:  Free, no purchase necessary, ages 12 and up welcome.  Because the last two Thursdays of this year are Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, the Book Club will not meet in December.  Our next meeting will be on Thursday, January 28, 2010.

Featured REVIEW:

Staff Picks for 2009:
Over the next few weeks, we will run employees' picks for the favorite books and games of this year.   This week, Manager Jim Crocker gets us started:</o:p>

Hi, all-

There's still a good 6 weeks or so of potentially great releases to go this year, but here's my favorites of the year so far:

Games (in no particular order, and leaving plenty of good stuff out):

A Penny for My Thoughts
(by Paul Tevis, from Indie Press Revolution): A small press 'story game' where the players assist each other in recovering the lost memories of their characters.

Rogue Trader (RPG by Fantasy Flight Games): Gothic SF exploring the forgotten depths of space in the Warhammer 40K Universe.

Revenge of the Giants (Campaign Adventure for D&D 4e): A Paragon-level book-length adventure in the 'mega-module' tradition that pits the PCs against the classic Gigantic triad: Hill, Frost, and Fire.

Small World Board Game (Days of Wonder): An elegantly clever board game of fantasy world domination featuring an infinitely-replayable modular special ability system.

Day After Ragnarok (by Ken Hite, for Savage Worlds): A 'Savage Setting' that presents a post-apocalypse world where Hitler summoned the Asgardian Gods in a last-ditch effort to win WW2, only to see the Allies nuke the Midgard Serpent, whose highly-magical dead corpse now lies draped across Europe.

Comics:

Irredeemable (Written by Mark Waid, from Boom! Comics): What would happen if the world's most powerful Superhuman got worked up over bad press? Excellent 'deconstructionist' superhero comics from Big Idea guy Mark Waid.

The Year of Loving Dangerously (By Ted Rall, from NBM): The sordid tale of Rall's summer spent swapping his looks and skill in the sack for room and board. A fascinating cautionary tale of a reluctant hustler.

Walking Dead (Written by Robert Kirkman, from Image Comics): Year after year, this relentlessly gripping tale of zombie survival horror continues to deliver. The only book in comics that utterly convinces you that NO character is safe.

Unwritten (by Mike Carey, from Vertigo Comics): A post-Harry Potter pop-lit modern fantasy about a young man whose father based a wildly popular children'' book character on him. Or is the other way around...?

Everybody is Stupid Except Me & Other Astute Observations
(by Peter Bagge): A collection of perpetual curmudgeon and Hate comics artiste Bagge's pieces from Reason magazine, the Libertarian political journal. Snarky, self-deprecating, and always astute. Includes bonus 'Founding Fathers Funnies', worth the price of admission all by themselves.

BONUS HONORABLE MENTION: Orange Chocolate Dessert Pocky: A new flavor we just got in this year, the extra-thick chocolate is perfectly complemented by the little bit of citrus built in. Decadent in a stop-me-before-I-eat-the- whole-box way.

-Jim C.

I'm flattered to find myself in the august company Ken Hite and Days of Wonder.

D'oh! Yes it is, sorry Paul!

If it's any consolation, if anyone asks, we'll know what they mean. : )

No problem; people get confused about it all the time. My favorite was Robin Laws, who tried to argue with Ryan Macklin about it on a podcast interview. Ryan was the book's editor, so he was unconvinced.

Fixed the title of your book. Sorry I didn't catch that.
